Not the 1st non-European pope by a LONG CHALK. We have had N. African and Middle Eastern popes. St. Peter, as far as I recall, was NOT born in Europe.
1st Jesuit. That is huge. There was a belief that a Jesuit would not agree to become pope. Rather serve a pope than be one.
It was interesting to note the way Pope Francis was dressed - the white cassock associated with a pope, but with no mozzetta -- a shoulder cape with ermine ... another sign of simplicity.
