Friends were in Japan as part of the Lean Sensei Executive Black Belt training. Most were able to fly home out of Narita today on AC004 to YVR arriving early this afternoon. They were visiting the Toyota plant on Friday afternoon when the earthquake hit, but everyone was safe as they were in the southern part of Japan. A 76-year-old missionary from Quebec was killed during Japan's earthquake and tsunami.
Andre Lachapelle, a member of the Quebec-based Society of Foreign Missions, was in the hard-hit city of Sendai when the quake hit.
The organization has confirmed Lachapelle's death, saying he tried to return to his home a half hour drive away, but never made it.
A spokesman for the organization, Eloy Roy, says the circumstances of Lachapelle's death are unclear.
But Roy suspects Lachapelle may have been caught in the tsunami as he drove along a coastal route to his home.
Lachapelle later died of a heart attack in hospital.
Roy says Lachapelle was trying to return to his community to be with them in a time of need.
Foreign Affairs has confirmed one Canadian death as a result of the disaster, but won't provide any details and won't confirm whether the person is Lachapelle.

FUKUSHIMA, Japan — An explosion shook a quake-damaged Japanese nuclear power plant Monday and plumes of smoke rose from the building, live television showed.
Japan's nuclear safety agency said the blast, at the number 3 reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 plant, was believed to be caused by hydrogen.
"We believe it was a hydrogen explosion. It is not immediately known if it affected the reactor," said spokesman Ryo Miyake.

Confusion from deadly quake spreading, over 5,000 dead or missing
Confusion caused by the catastrophic earthquake and massive tsunamis spread in Japan on Monday, with a quake-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant seeing another hydrogen explosion while train services in the Kanto region surrounding Tokyo were mostly paralyzed due to Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s announcement it was implementing power rationing.
The number of those who have died or remain unaccounted for following the magnitude 9.0 quake topped 5,000 after some 2,000 were found Monday on two shores in Miyagi Prefecture, while police and firefighters worked to recover another 200 to 300 bodies in Sendai, the capital of Miyagi.
Of the 2,000, about 1,000 were spotted in the town of Minamisanriku where the prefectural government has been unable to contact about 10,000 people -- over half the local population.
In Miyagi Prefecture alone, a total of 785 bodies had been recovered as of noon Monday, the local police said, while the central government continued to struggle to grasp the full extent of the disaster.
In Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, the fate of some 8,000 residents remained unknown.

2nd explosion rocks Japan nuclear plant; US ships pull back from shore amid radiation
SOMA, Japan - The second hydrogen explosion in three days rocked a stricken Japanese nuclear plant Monday, sending a massive cloud of smoke into the air and injuring 11 workers. Hours later, the U.S. said it had shifted its offshore forces away from the plant after detecting low levels of radiation.
The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan was about 100 miles (160 kilometres) offshore when it detected the radiation, which U.S. officials said was about the same as one month's normal exposure to natural background radiation in the environment.
It was not clear if the leak happened during Monday's explosion. That blast was felt 25 miles (40 kilometres) away, but the plant's operator said radiation levels at the reactor were still within legal limits.

Japan quake tests supply chain from chips to ships
(Reuters) - Automakers, shipbuilders and technology companies worldwide scrambled to replace supplies after the disaster in Japan shut down production plants there and disrupted the global manufacturing supply chain.
Technology companies were especially affected since Japan accounts for one-fifth of the world's semiconductor production, including 40 percent of output for memory chips, used in everything from smartphones, tablets to computers.
Multinationals that buy parts from Japan or have plants located there were tackling problems from reliable power supplies to when roads, railways and ports will reopen after Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan. Toyota Corp and Sony Corp were among those that have suspended production.

Exposed fuel rods raise threat of meltdown in Japan
SOMA, Japan - Water levels dropped precipitously Monday inside a Japanese nuclear reactor, twice leaving the uranium fuel rods completely exposed and raising the threat of a meltdown, hours after a hydrogen explosion tore through the building housing a different reactor.
Water levels were restored after the first decrease, but the rods remained partially exposed late Monday night, increasing the risk of the spread of radiation and the potential for an eventual meltdown.
The cascading troubles in the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant compounded the immense challenges faced by the Tokyo government, already struggling to send relief to hundreds of thousands of people along the country's quake- and tsunami-ravaged coast where at least 10,000 people are believed to have died.

Another financial crisis possible but unlikely, experts say
With Japan's stock market experiencing losses unheard of since the most recent financial crash took hold in 2008, and world markets almost universally in sharp decline on Tuesday, it raises the question: Are we seeing the start of another market crisis?
"That is certainly a possibility; hopefully not a high one," said Adrian Mastracci, portfolio manager at Vancouver's KCM Wealth Management.
Japan's benchmark stock index, the Nikkei 225, lost 10.55 per cent Tuesday. A daily loss one-tenth that magnitude is seen as a bad day in normal times.
