The head of Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) has announced the end of the Gaddafi era, while sporadic fighting continued across the capital, Tripoli.
Fighting and gun battles erupted in parts of Tripoli on Monday after tanks left Bab al-Azizyah, Muammar Gaddafi's compound, to confront the rebel assault that gained control of much of the capital in a battle overnight.
Many of the streets in the centre of the city - where anti-government supporters had celebrated hours earlier - were abandoned as pockets of pro-Gaddafi resistance and the presence of snipers and artillery fire made the area dangerous.

The next stop on the Arab freedom train is Damascus
Today, when Gadhafi is slowly losing its grip on the Libyan capital, and the Arab revolution movement has checked off a third victory after Tunisia and Egypt, a "critical mass" of ousted leaders is accumulating, which may pave the steep slope for more leaders.
The following two leaders are already waiting in line: Syria's Bashar Assad and Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh. Like their ousted predecessors, each of them is still certain that his own fate and luck are more successful than that of his colleagues.

UN chief urges forces loyal to Gadhafi to stop fighting and makeway for democratic transition
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging forces loyal to Libyan
leader Moammar Gadhafi to stop fighting immediately and make way for
"a smooth transition" that ensures a free and democratic future
for the country.
The U.N. chief told reporters Monday it is important that the
conflict ends with no further loss of life and without retribution.
He did not specifically call for Gadhafi to step down.
Ban welcomed assurances from rebel leader Mustafa Abdel-Jalil
that "extreme care" will be taken to protect civilians and
maintain law and order.
Ban announced that he will hold meeting on Libya later this week
with major organizations, including the Arab League, African Union
and European Union.
He said the U.N. stands ready to extend "all possible
assistance" to the Libyan people once the fighting ends.

Libyan opposition leader says third Gadhafi son captured by rebels
BENGHAZI, Libya - Libya's opposition leader says rebels captured
another of Moammar Gadhafi's sons - raising to three the number of
the Libyan leader's children in custody.
Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, head of the National Transitional Council,
told the Associated Press on Monday that rebels detained al-Saadi
Gadhafi on Sunday night along with his brother Seif al-Islam.
Gadhafi's sons and a daughter have all played roles in their
father's regime, some in diplomatic or business roles. Al-Saadi and
his brothers Mutassim and Khamis all headed military brigades.
The International Criminal Court has confirmed the capture of
Seif al-Islam, who along with his father faces charges of crimes
against humanity. Another son, Mohammed, was under house arrest.

NY Times - Explosions and the sound of mortars could still be heard Monday morning, and a rebel fighter told Al Jazeera television that pro-Qaddafi forces still controlled 15 to 20 percent of the capital. An elite rebel brigade that was supposed to establish a police presence throughout the city instead found itself involved in a firefight with pro-Qaddafi forces.
News reports quoting rebel officials said tanks had emerged from Colonel Qaddafi’s compound and opened fire. “There haven’t been many silent minutes,” Karen Graham, a British nurse in Tripoli told the BBC.

Rebels in Tripoli have restored to Green Square the name it had before Gaddafi took power in Libya over four decades ago. The rebels’ movement is gaining wider international support each hour, while Tripoli is plunging deeper into combat.

Iranian state television network Press TV reports that Libyan opposition fighters have taken control of Libyan state television:
Libya's Jamahiriyah state television channel went off air on Monday, after opposition fighters seized control of its building on Monday.
"The revolutionaries stormed the television building ... after killing the soldiers surrounding it. It is now under their control," Reuters quoted an opposition spokesman as saying.
The TV station has been used to broadcast Gaddafi regime's propaganda messages since the Libyan revolution began in February. It is believed that the loss of the TV station is a major blow to the Libyan dictator.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the world must help Libya stabilize after rebels topple Moammar Gadhafi's regime.
Merkel says: "We must quickly create political structures which will enable a transition from the current situation into a peaceful, democratic and free society."
She says that Gadhafi's money must be "secured in the name of the Libyan people and used to finance the transition to democracy."

Libyan rebel leader urges fighters to respect law, promises fair trials for Qaddafi
The head of Libya’s rebel national council urged his fighters on Monday to respect the law and not take violent revenge on members of Muammar Qaddafi’s fallen regime, adding that indiscipline among rebels could even lead him to resign.
Mustafa Abdel Jalil, chairman of the National Transitional Council, promised fair trials for Qaddafi and members of his government and called for tolerance, forgiveness and the protection of civilians and of public and private property.
“I call upon our revolutionaries ... not to take the law into their own hands and to let justice take its course,” Jalil told a news conference in the rebels’ bastion of Benghazi in eastern Libya.
He said the era of Qaddafi was over although final victory would only come when the man who ruled Libya harshly for 42 years was captured.
